Terri Baranowski
Terri Baranowski

Terri Baranowski is a writer, speaker, editor, literary agent, and founder of Gateway Literary and Bluestocking Editorial. With over twenty years experience working with writers, she has prepared numerous manuscripts for publication and is currently specializing in hybrid contracts designed to meet the diverse needs of today’s author. Terri graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University where she was a writer and key player in the development of an Alternate Reality Game (ARG) involving various new media platforms to promote The Book of Jer3miah, a webisode series that received New York Times recognition. She also developed a television series for BYU-TV and assisted in the creation and editing of The Criterion, BYU’s first literary criticism journal. The author of several award-winning humorous essays, Terri has also served as guest feature columnist, and was instrumental in the formation of a few critique groups, all of which have given her the preposterous idea that she is a writer. Her current frustrations over the uncooperative characters in her firstaspired-literary- but-morphing- into chick lit novel, Chimera, are beginning to make her think otherwise. Terri resides in Vineyard, Utah with a couple of unruly Shih Tzu’s, a mile-high slush-pile, and anindomitable Polish spirit. www.gatewayliterary.com

Born in Salt Lake City Utah, Jason grew up on a steady diet of anime, science fiction, Dungeons and Dragons, JRPG’s, and chocolate cake donuts. By some inexplicable cosmic anomaly Jason managed to get married, and is the proud father of four children, one of which is certainly destined to one day slay him and absorb his soul. Jason is also a proud “anonymous” member of the Space Balrogs comedy troupe, and yes, he has poll-danced – there is photographic evidence. Jason has too many websites to keep track of, but his main online homes are: http://www.authorjasonking.com/ Author page http://www.immortal-works.com/ Company page http://authorjasonking.blogspot.com/ Personal page in which Jason blogs about being a C+ Mormon.

Fantastic Composition Master Class

4-hour Master Class. $81.00
Class is limited to 18 students
Friday, June 9th, 9am-1pm

All art benefits from a good sense of composition. The way an image is organized can become clarifying or confusing to the viewer – the effect you’re trying to achieve is up to you. Fantasy artist Rob Carlos will give you a set of compositional tools that you can use to get your idea across.

a) Simplify or complicate?: How many different elements to you want to use to create your image. Tone, hue, texture, detail – everything adds another level to take into account.

b) Direct the eye: How to create a sense of motion, suggesting to a viewer how to read the story behind the image.

c) Relaxed vs. Tense: Different choices in design can cause a sense of being balanced or off-balance. How can you use that to your advantage when telling your story?

d) Final touches: How do you know if your composition is working? Do you have trouble knowing if an image is ‘finished’? Leonardo DaVinci says Art is never finished, only abandoned. We will discuss how to know when to abandon it!

How to Plot a Writing Career

8-hour Master Class $160.00
Class is limited to 20 students
Part 1: Friday, June 9th, 2pm -6pm
Part 2: Saturday, June 10th, 2pm-6pm

Many new authors learn how to write a book but never learn how to develop and manage a career.  Thus, they shoot themselves in the foot before they ever start.

a) Your goal is NOT to write a book, it is to develop a career as a “Superlead” writer.  What’s the difference between the two?
b) Defining yourself as an author.  Creating a vision for who you will become, what to sell.
c) Entering the market–Launching yourself to bestsellerdom.  In this class we will cover such things as how to “build your list.” This includes such things as building a website, creating an image, using Facebook and social media, doing book signings, etc.
d) Platforming.  With each book that you write, your previous sales act as a platform.  In this class we will talk about platform building, platform jumping, co-opting other writers’ fans, and so on.
e) Plotting a career. What kinds of novels to write, creating a bestselling series, when to release novels, when to sell books, how to throw an auction, etc.

[accordion-item title=”Why do Master Classes cost more? (click to view)”]
The cost for Master Classes is based on the length of the class, the instructor, and the instructor’s time and travel. We want to bring in the best to teach these in-depth classes and that comes at a cost. Master Class registration includes general admission.

Some of these instructors teach their own weekend and weeklong sessions, and Master Classes provide you the opportunity to sample these classes at a fraction of the cost.

[accordion-item title=”Why Dragons and Phoenixes? (click to view)”]
Dragons and Phoenixes are creatures of fire. Their legends die and are reborn across cultures and timefires that never end. We refer to our artists as Phoenixes and our writers as Dragons. Both groups create new myths.
[/accordion-item]

[accordion-item title=”Why are artists our Phoenixes? (click to view)”]
As phoenixes are legends reborn from the ashes of life and fire, we believe that artists, especially those in science fiction and fantasy, constantly recreate themselves through their art. Their creative works ignite the creative fire in others, propelling us on to new horizons.

[accordion-item title=”Why are writers our Dragons? (click to view)”]
Traditionally, dragons are the keepers of knowledge and wealth. At Fyrecon we believe that writers, especially those of science fiction and fantasy, are the same. They keep and record the wealth of stories we have not lived yet. Their words hold the keys to new ideas and the realities yet to be.
