Philo Barnhart is a professional film animator from Oak Park, IL, known for his work on feature-length films: The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Rescuers Down Under, The Secret of NIMH, Happily Ever After, An American Tail, and special effects for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Philo worked on many animated TV shows and video games, including The Smurfs, Scooby Doo, Jem and the Holograms, Space Ace, Dragon’s Lair, and many more. He worked on consumer products for several years with Disney, and to this day you can still find his artwork being used on toys, books, home electronics/appliances, apparel, and posters.
Philo’s parent, Dale Barnhart and Phyllis Barnhart, were both animators at Disney’s animation studios. Growing up watching the magic of art become animation, he has spent his life continuing the tradition of making stories come to life through art.
Currently Philo is working with Silver Phoenix Entertainment, Inc. His latest comic title is Whispers from the Void.

a) When is your character and your setting: modern, futuristic, or historical? Discover how to make choices that allow your characters and world to fit together.
b) Style. Different techniques and exaggerations set the tone of your illustrations. Explore how the different types of style brand your creation.
c) Develop shorthand for drawing characters. Shorten your drawing time by learning the techniques to draw your characters and world quickly.
d) Developing your own formula. What key characteristics need to be developed which will allow any artist to draw your creations. Learn how to communicate these to a team.

No matter what world you create in, the characters have clothing and that clothing should fit your world. Learn how to design a character’s clothing to fit the type of story and time period with animator Philo Barnhart. Starting with historical clothing and moving to your own creations, learn what aspects of clothing must be considered to make it come to life.
a) A brief history of clothing. Review how clothing has evolved.
b) How clothing goes together. Part of drawing clothing is understanding where seams and fastenings go.
c) Illustrating texture and patterns on clothing. Explore how patterns and textures change within the draping of clothing.
d) Fashion drawings. Learn how to create studies of the character with different clothing designs
