Joshua Essoe

Joshua Essoe is a full-time editor who has edited for NYT bestsellers including Piers Anthony, David Farland, and Dean Lorey. He has edited for USA Today bestsellers, Writers of the Future winners, and many independents. He was also lead editor at Urban Fantasy Magazine and founded the weekly writing podcast Hide and Create with Michael J. Sullivan, Diana Rowland, Jay Wells, and Debbie Viguie. You can find Joshua teaching at the Superstars Writing Seminar every February in Colorado. The 1st two of his books on writing funded in just hours on Kickstarter, each covering two subjects of the most-common issues he sees in fiction writing.

Worldbuilding

Worldbuilding is divided into a detailed introduction and 6 comprehensive, easy-to-access dilemmas that I most often see plaguing authors' worldbuilding. It explains how to avoid those dilemmas from the start, and fix them if they're already there..

Sex Scenes

Sex Scenes delves into the multitude of complex and difficult aspects of writing sex scenes in fiction. I go into detail on if and when you should include a sex scene, how far you should go, what a sex scene should do for your story, and most importantly, what it should do for your characters. I go through the most common mistakes I see and how to fix them, and even include a list of words you should probably put on your no-fly list. In the margins you’ll find more Pro Tips and exercises to help you through.

Mood and Atmosphere

Mood and Atmosphere defines and delves into the 8 primary tools used to create the emotional framework of your story--its emotionality--by breaking them down into easy-access chapters.

Action Sequences

Action Sequences is divided into 8 easy-to-access dilemmas that I most frequently see plaguing action scenes, like missing emotional penetration, research, melodramatics, and setting and blocking. Each section offers a deep dive with examples into the subject matter, plus a bunch of sidebar Pro Tips and exercises.

The dreaded editing phase. It’s been the rare writer who’s told me how much they enjoy it. Well you are in for a treat because I’m going to give you a cheat sheet to the top 20 mistakes I’ve seen committed in the manuscripts I’ve edited day in and day out as a full-time editor since 2010. I’ve seen authors on their first books make them, and writers on their nineteenth. We’ll discuss what they are, how to find them, and how to eradicate them so that when you leave, you’ll truly be able to level-up your writing.
